Sugar-Free Berry Frappe Recipe (Keto, Gluten-Free, Vegan Option)
#30DaysOfSugar
Craving a cold drink without the calories or sugar? Well, here's my creamy, cold and fruity Starbucks-style sugar-free berry frappuccino recipe - oh, and it's keto-friendly and comes with a vegan variation! The perfect sugarless guilt-free summer treat!
I have to admit that frappes are my weakness.
Coffee and tea are good, but for me, nothing can ever really surpass a sweet Starbucks Strawberry Cream frappe on a warm summer’s day (or even a cold winter’s day too)!
The problem is, I try to stay sugar-free for the majority of the week, and I occasionally go on even longer stretches (in fact, I was on day 24 of a 30-day sugar free challenge when I created this recipe), and Starbucks frappes are notoriously high in sugar and calories.
Actually, frappuccinos in general are objectively, unequivocally, categorically bad for your health AND expensive (those $4 add up).
A grande caramel Frappuccino made with 2% milk has 270 calories and 60g of carbohydrates, and 59g of this carb is attributed to the sugar. This is only a 16 oz. cup, and you haven’t added the whipped cream yet.
I won’t even mention all of the chemicals and artificial ingredients they add - that’s a story for another blog post.
But I haven’t always been able to limit my frappe - or sugar in general - intake so easily.
I used to really struggle with sugar addiction, so much so that I tried everything I could think of to get rid of the cravings. But, eventually I wouldn’t be able to hold off and I would en up heading to the local Starbucks for my fave frappe!
This is because sugar is super addictive - like more addictive than cocaine addictive (you can learn more about sugar addiction and its effects here) - and it feels virtually impossible to break the yearnings for it.
My sugar addiction was caused by a really stressful time in my life, in which I turned to sweets, and when it was at its height, I was in really bad shape both physically and mentally.
I won’t bore you with the whole story today (yes, I know this is a recipe post), but I eventually realised that my health issues were being caused by my diet, and I set about researching sugar - how to reduce it and how to balance it, so I didn’t have to live a totally sugarless life (what’s life without a little indulgence here and there?).
I developed a system that would help me heal myself and my sugar addiction, and through trial and error, it worked. I can now go sugar-free, and not worry about breaking down into a sugar binge.
Personally I believe that you can still indulge in an unhealthy sugary frappe or treat every here and there - as long as you are able to control your sugar cravings.
The Sugar-Free Berry Frappe
But we all know that the first step towards kicking cravings for something sweet is finding a healthy and delicious replacement, which is where this frappe recipe comes in!
It’s creamy, sweet but sugar-free, cooling, full of healthy antioxidant boosting berries, and has a dairy free variation for all of you on Keto or Vegan diets (plus, almond milk has some pretty nice health boosting benefits)!
So, whether you’re controlling your sugar consumption, cutting out sugar, or just want a healthy treat, this is the drink for you!
